Quality Control of Feed Materials for Animal Suppliers
GMP+ 2006 - Animal Feed

Significance
Animal feed constitutes an important stage of the livestock production chain. Just like food for human consumption, it is expected to meet high safety standards. In order to put into effect their requirements, the Dutch Productshap Diervoeder (PDV) developed the GMP+ standard. It combines the requirements of ISO 9001 and those of the Codex Alimentarius, and is applicable throughout the feed supply chain. PDV calls for all suppliers worldwide to participate in this system.

GMP+ – for whom?
GMP+ applies to the entire supply chain, from the producers of raw materials to the manufacturers of animal feed and feed ingredients, and the distributors who trade with the Dutch feed industry.

Benefits
  • Fulfillment of the requirements of PDV and safeguarding of the Dutch market
  • Improved confidence of customers and retailers in the organization’s ability to perform
  • Increased product safety and reduced risk of product liability on the basis of a pro-active HACCP approach

Certification work flow
Assessments to GMP+ usually take place every six months. Following certification, an unannounced assessment is required after six months. Only the B2 standard does not include this kind of assessment. What is specific to GMP+ assessments is that any non-conformities will be separated into three categories. No certificate will be issued in case of category 1 or 2 non-conformities, or in case of more than 10 non-conformities in category 3.

The standards include provisions on the next steps to be taken. After the assessment, the organization receives action plans with the non-conformities, if any. DQS decides on the success of the certification. Finally, the organization will need to work through the nonconformities within a specified period of time. At the same time, the organization receives the report and their certificate. Synergies can be realized when assessing an integrated management system according to various standards at the same time.
